A look back through the years at past teams

Cricket in term one was a road strewn with highlights, lost opportunities and some downright frustrating performances. Missing the likes of Jake "They came to see me bat, not you bowl" Bezzant, Stephen Ross, Stefan van der Horst and the infamous Brad Cook, we were looking at a rebuilding phase. Selectors were bribed, calls were made, but there was no place to be found for Cameron Suisted who even missed out on substitute fielding duties to Daniel Clayton.

There were some nailbiting finishes this season. Games were won and lost by extreme margins - there was the one wicket loss at Hamilton Boys' High, the eight run loss to St John's, the 11 run and two wicket victories over Fraser High and Matamata respectively. On the other hand, there were some demolition jobs performed. After a less than impressive performance against Fraser High in the Gillette Cup, the next game produced a win by 168 runs. As old beardy face (WG Grace, not Mr Westberry) suggested, we batted first and scored 259 with Danny Woodlock smashing 82 and Sean Keeley scoring an elegant 66. Another superb victory came against St Paul's on a very ordinary cricketing day, or so it seemed. It was raining. None of the assembled players wanted to have anything to do with cricket, but we played on. St Paul's chose to bat and boy, did they get it wrong. After removing St Paul's for 142, Keenan decided that he needed to go home early. With that, he set about demolishing the opposition, scoring 111 off 66 balls faced. Not long after, a 10 wicket victory was completed.

We eventually made the Plate final and finished up beating Matamata by two wickets.

Outstanding performers this season were Sean Keeley who took 21 wickets at an average of 10.62; Danny Woodlock (15 wickets @ 17.4) and Jeremy Clayton (13 wickets @16.3) also performed well. Keenan Adlam averaged 40.63 with the bat, closely followed by Ross Laidlaw with 37 and Sean Keeley with an average of 32.57.

2009

Colts

This year the team battled well and had some exceptional wins and narrow losses. Players trained well and represented the school to the highest levels. The season started in a challenging way with a wet start to the season and a high number of away games. The team was challenged by strong competition from Hamilton Boys', St Paul's and Matamata.

However, later in the season the team came right with an exceptional win over the Melville Fillies (containing a large number of ND players) and a nail-biting thriller against a strong St John's. The team was again well supported by many parents and a huge thank you must go to the Kirkbrides whose transport was more than useful. This year many players challenged their comfort zones, with Kyle 'Toastie' Mallinger adopting an opening role, Jimmie a strike bowling role and Frodo tackling a very challenging bread roll. Several players were rep candidates this year, with Shaun, Kyle, Harlee and Mitch all doing well.

The team managed to again raise the profile of cricket in the school and Jordan and Brendan both debuting and playing a great season.

Brooke Kirkbride

Perseverance, hard work and natural talent - when this mix comes right a great player is formed. This year will be remembered for the rise of Brooke Kirkbride. At the age of 15 she was selected for a Northern Districts emerging player squad to play in  a tournament in Christchurch. After several great performances she was selected to play in the Northern Districts Women's team in the Women's National Competition. In her First Class career to date she has claimed the wicket of White Fern World Cup runner up batsman and bowled extremely economically. For many, the chance to play First Class cricket is enough, however, not for this young lady.

This year at the age of 16 she has been invited to attend the National Women Emerging Player camps in Christchurch. With a possible overseas tour at the end of the year and a demanding First Class season this young lady has a lot on her plate.

Further evidence as to the civilising nature of the game of cricket was seen this year as Cambridge High School joined the ranks of the largest co-ed cricket schools in the Waikato, fielding three senior boys' teams, two junior boys' teams and one girls' team. The boys' 1st XI team reached the Northern Districts quarter finals of the Gillette Cup, whilst the junior team of year 9 and 10 boys reached the Northern Districts semi-finals of their equivalent competition.

1st XI

There was a different look to the team from the end of last season. Old timers Keenan Adlam, Sean Keeley and Jeremy Clayton departed the scene and other selections shuffled the line up. New caps were Jono Feast, Cale Villiger, Nic Boyle and Shaun Wilkie. Having seen the pasture was definitely greener on the other side of SH1, Robbie Smith joined from St Peter's. The highlight of Term One was the team's run in the Gillette Cup through the Twenty 20 rounds to the Northern Districts quarter final against Tauranga Boys' College. Along the way there were two notable games; the first a last ball win against St Peter's with Mark O'Shaughnessy gloving the ball to take the game. The second was a huge comeback against Mount Maunganui. Down and out twice in the game, Nic Boyle scored a quick fire 54 to push the team from 40/3 to 140/6. When Mount Maunganui were cruising at 94/2 with 8 overs to go, the team fought back and took eight wickets for 17 runs in four and a half overs to progress to the quarter finals.

The match against Tauranga Boys' was noteworthy due to the fact that Ross Laidlaw managed to take the wicket of Kane Williamson, the captain of the New Zealand Under 19 team. Apart from that the weather was terrible, the outfield was long and Andrew George ate most of the lunch. In four hours, there was only two and a half hours of cricket. Cambridge struggled to 84 of 44 overs with the unmown outfield hampering efforts to score quick runs. Andrew George had the home team at 0/1 after the first ball, but Williamson scored 59 off 36 balls to make the game safe for Tauranga, who won by seven wickets.

Locally the team has had success in the 50 over games competition, currently third with three rounds to play. Shane Butcher score his first 100 against Te Aroha and is currently averaging 72 in the longer game. Other notable batting efforts have been Jono Feast's debut innings of 70 not out against Matamata and Cale Villiger who made 81 not out against Fraser High on his debut. TYhere have also been some impressive bowling performances. Andrew George and Shaun Wilkie took their first five wicket bags with 6-44 and 5-28 respectively. Ross Laidlaw has been the leading wicket taker with 15 wickets at an average of 12-3.

2nd XI

Under the energetic tutelage of Mr Sheehan, the 2nd XI has continued to feature near the top of their competition. Unfortunately the weather hampered their challenge for the top two position of which they are capable. Impressive performances included the demolition of St Peter's 2nd XI by eight wickets along with another eight wicket win against Fairfield College 1st XI. Stand out performers in these games were Tim Hall against St Peter's (5-15) and Sam Garmonsway against Fairfield (51 not out).

3rd XI

Ethan Ward stepped up to coach, manage and babysit the keen members of the 3rd XI in term one. This was a team of mainly Year 11 students and lacked some experience. There were some highlights however - Sean Anderson smashed 45 off 11 deliveries against Hamilton Boys' High 8th XI, while Ben Dick and Ethan Ward were consistent wicket takers.

Colts

The season began with the rebuilding of the successful side from last year. The introduction of several talented Year 9 players to support the more than capable Year 10s resulted in a team that was placed third in the first part of the season. With great wins over Melville, Hillcrest and Hamilton Boys' High the team developed a successful style of play. Well let by the brother and sister combination of Mitchell and Brooke Kirkbride, the team strived for success. James Bateman became an anchor and the top of the innings frustrating the opposition quick's. Mate, Caleb, Daniel and Patrick all assisted at key times through the season with important contributions with the bat. In the bowling, a pace attack of Josh, Matty, Kyle and the talented Harlee destroyed and terrified the opposition batsman with accurate aggressive bowling. The team would like to thank all the support of the parents who tirelessly cheered them. A special thank you must also be mentioned from the team to Mr Kirkbride for his assistance with the coaching of the side. The parents would like to thank the players for a great 'parent versus player' game. Better luck next time!

2010

1st XI Boys 2010 saw the debut of several players including Jay Randel, Raf Shuker, Harlee Overton and Kyle 'Toastie' Mallinger. 2010 also saw the maturing of some key players; Ross Laidlaw again dominated with the ball but also shone with the bat including a personal best of 60 not out to win a game. Shaun Wilkie finally became the dominating force that we all knew he was capable of with a match winning 5 for 12 in the 20/20 regional final. Patrick Tomsett (86) and Caleb Webb created a sound opening partnership where both players achieved personal bests. The return of Jordan Mallinger for the 20/20 games provided the team an athletic edge and resulted in the side making it to the Northern District Gillette Cup Playoffs once again.

The loss of Jono Feast to injury was a great loss to the side in both his performance and leadership. Brooke Kirkbride took responsibility with the new ball and showed she was a force to be reckoned with. Mitch Kirkbride had a magical weekend in the final two day game, as he broke the school bowling record with 8 for 36 and followed it up with 5 for 12. This exceptional performance enables him to receive the Hamilton Cricket Bowling Prize. Last but not least, Nik Boyle in his debut season as Captain, led from the front by scoring a magnificent 139 in a 20/20 game and also dominating in the final two day game with a sound 102. The team would like to thank the parental support that we received this year.

Grass Roots

This term is thrown around in sport a lot but the following people epitomise the concept. The first is Patrick O'Shaughnessy. This man is involved in all forms of the game and without the services to Cambridge High School Cricket then it would be in dire circumstances. Patrick began his service in 2005 where he looked after two teams at CHS. Starting with the seconds he got them started at 9.30 and then raced across town to look after the Colts side. 2006 saw him take on the role of the seconds where he was responsible for creating and fostering some exceptional talent and characters. 2007-2009 saw him step into the role of 1st XI coach where he had some huge successes. 2010 saw him step bakc and take up the role of Colts coach. Here he again took on the development role. If this is not enough then he also challenged himself with Representative and Administration roles. CHS owes a debt of thanks to Patrick and looks forward to what challenges he will do in the future.
