MAY 2014 UPDATES

**************************************************************************************************

!!! CONGRATULATIONS !!!

Congratulations to Paige Pretswell who has just been officially named in the Northern Districts Spirit Squad for the 2014/2015 season.  Paige has been working hard toward this goal for quite a while so if you see her please congratulate her.  With the addition of Paige to the squad we now have 3 players in the Spirit squad who are either current or former CHS players.  The other two players being Rhianna Vincent and Brooke Kirkbride.

**************************************************************************************************

FORMER CHS PLAYER SELECTED FOR ND MAORI WOMENS TEAM

Congratulations to Rhianna Vincent who was recently selected  for the ND Maori Womens team.  ND lead the way with the first Maori Mens team in NZ and are continuing to lead the way with the country's first Maori Womens team.  Rhianna's brother Keith (also a former CHS Player) is currently part of the ND Maori Mens team, as is another former CHS player, Jake Bezzant.

OUTDOOR PRACTICE NETS

The contractors have been in and the work on upgrading the nets has begun and should be finished any day now.  If you get a chance pop down and take a look.

INDOOR CRICKET

Due to a lack of interested players this term from CHS players there will be no CHS indoor during term 2.  Most of those interested in playing indoor were however keen to play in term 3 so we will be following this up again in term 3.

MARCH 2014 UPDATES

NO.1 PITCH UNDER REPAIR

Our new pitch suffered some minor damage on the 8th March during our 1st XI game with the matting at one end right on the bowling crease peeling back.  This has now been glued back down and Cambridge High School Cricket would like to extend our thanks to the school ground staff for their quick response and efforts in repairing this for us.  Thanks Neil and Marty!!!

CHS CRICKET GIRLS TEAM MAKES FINAL

They may not have been playing together long, but our girls team has managed to do enough to get themselves into the final for their Waikato Valley South competition and play against Tokoroa Girls at CHS on Wednesday 12th March from 3:30pm.  If you have a chance come on down and show the girls your support.  This is the first final any of our teams have been in for 3 or 4 years, and possibly the first final our girls team has been in for longer than that.  Well done girls!!!!

UPDATE:

Although the girls fought well posting a very defendable 104 runs, and despite some good bowling lead by Holly with a caught and bowled off Tokoroa's 2nd ball of their innings, some sharp catching in close by Nu'umoe, some good chasing in the field and hot sun by the Christy, Sarah, Natasha, Emily and Alex, backed up by Georgia behind the stumps, the Tokoroa girls proved to be too good for us again reaching the target with 7 overs to spare and only 4 wickets down.

Well done though girls you all performed really well and it was great to see you all having a lot of fun and enjoying your cricket.

1st XI GILLETTE CUP

Having secured a spot in the second round of this year's 1st XI Gillette Cup, and after a number of changes regarding opposition, game days and venues, our 1st XI were drawn to play against St John's College 1st XI at Waikato University on Friday 7th March, with the winner going on to play the winner between Hillcrest High School and Matamata College to see who went through to the next round.  Unfortunately, St John's proved to be too good for us on the day and so the planning and development ahead of next year's competition begins.

In a quirk of nature we were also drawn to play against St John's the following day as part of our regular season competition, and although we did lose to them again our team put in a better performance and pushed St John's a lot further in this second game, with the team showing some good improvement over the previous day.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR FORMER CHS CRICKET CLUB MEMBER

Congratulations to Hugo Bothma (Captain of our 1st XI in 2013) who has been awarded the John Parker Scholarship for Cricket.  Hugo is off to the UK to coach two teams for their summer season.  Accomodation, food and a job already lined up for him.  Good luck Hugo we hope you enjoy the experience and come back to us soon to help with coaching.

FORMER CHS CRICKET CLUB MEMBERS SELECTED FOR ND MAORI MENS TEAM

Congratulations also go to two former members of the CHS Cricket Club, Keith Vincent and Jake Bezzant, who have been selected again for the Northern Districts Maori team.  The team are about to make history by taking part in the first domestic cricket game between two maori teams on 23rd March in Taupo when Northern Districts take on Wellington.  They will also be playng a game against the Waikato University at Seddon Park on 24th March so why not go down and show them your support.

IF YOU ARE STILL ON HOLIDAY OR UNABLE TO MAKE IT FOR ANY REASON PLEASE LET US KNOW AS WE ARE AWARE THAT A NUMBER OF YOU ARE STILL AWAY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT.  THIS IS NOT THE ONLY TRIAL SESSION WE WILL BE USING TO SELECT OUR 1ST XI.

This year the 1st and 2nd XI teams will be training together and every player has an equal opportunity to fight for a spot  in the 1st XI every week.

Just because you do not make the first selection does not mean you can not still make the 1st team.  Each week the best performing players both on and off the field will be selected for the 1st XI for that Saturday with the remaining players being expected to play for the 2nd XI for the week.

1st XI & 2nd XI TRAININGS

COLTS TRIALS

We will be holding the first of our Colts trials on Sunday 26th January from 12pm to 4pm.  We will be doing a lot of work on fielding and fitness, with some net work thrown in and depending on numbers maybe some open wicket work.  If you are considering trialing for the Colts this term please come down and make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen and a drink bottle.

IF YOU ARE STILL ON HOLIDAY OR UNABLE TO MAKE IT FOR ANY REASON PLEASE LET US KNOW AS WE ARE AWARE THAT A NUMBER OF YOU ARE STILL AWAY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT.  THIS IS NOT THE ONLY TRIAL SESSION WE WILL BE USING TO SELECT OUR COLTS.

COLTS TRAININGS

With the Colts Trials starting on Sunday 26th January we will be starting trainings for the Colts on Thursday  23rd January from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.  Trainings will start on Thursday 30th January at 3:30pm to 5:30pm and will be every Tuesday and Thursday after this from 3:30pm to 5:30pm wet or fine and until the Colts team is announced any year 9 and 10 players can come along and join in with these trainings.

COMMITTEE MEETING

Our next Committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 21st January at 6pm at ONYX Restaurant in Cambridge.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the NZCT Cup Team who have successfully made it into round two of the NZCT Cup by beating Morinsville by 57 runs in their 20/20 game on 25 November thanks to a top batting performance by both Reo Sakurano (63 not out) and Daniel Godwin (with his first ever 50 in cricket and not out too) who combined for a partnership of 120 to help Cambridge set a target of 147 off 20 overs.  Together they scored an amazing 101 in the last 10 overs.  Awesome work guys!!!

Congratulations to Emily and Holly Christensen who have been selected to play for the Waikato Valley Secondary School Girls Team in the December tournament in Rotorua.  Well done girls!!!!

Congratulations to our Principals Cup Team on defending the Cup this year against the Middle School.  There were a number of top efforts by both sides but the 130 run partnership by Reo Sakurano (91) and Kyle Stead (38) set the boys up well for a good win.

Congratulations to the following members of the Cambridge High School Cricket Club for making the Waikato Valley Junior Secondary Schools Team - Noah-John Woest, Reinhard Durandt, Harry Baxter and Reo Sakurano.  Well done boys.

Congratulations also to Catherine Shen from our Girls Team for being named DUX for Cambridge High School for 2013.  Well done Catherine.

NOVEMBER 2013 UPDATES

UPDATE ON TEAM RESULTS

Don't forget to check out the results page for our teams to see how the teams have been performing this term.  We have been enjoying a great last couple of weeks of cricket with most of our teams starting to record regular wins.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING

The next committee meeting is scheduled for the 26th November at 6pm in the school library with everyone welcome to attend.

UPDATE ON PITCH AND NETS

The new pitch has now been completed and has already had a number of games played on it with a lot of positive feed back about it's performance.  The bowling run ups to the practice nets have now been replaced as well.  The next project is the reshaping and repairs to the practice nets themselves.  This will take pace once we have managed to raise some more much needed funds and have obtained a new quote for the work.

UPDATE ON FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

Following on from our success with the Mitre 10 Mega and Bookarama fundraising efforts we recently hosted a Rotary Club dinner which went really well.  A big thank you must go to all those people who helped with the catering for this evening.  It was good to hear there were so many involved.

COMMITTEE MEETING

The previous committee meeting was scheduled for the Tuesday 15th October at 6pm in the school library.

CRICHQ - click here

NZ Cricket are introducing CricHQ as the electronic scoring system across the whole country this season. There are still some concerns around the privacy of players. A player pack has been sent home to all parents of players, urging them to sign which part they agree with – agreeing, or not, for their child’s name being used to register them on CricHQ.

UPDATE ON PITCH AND NETS

The concrete has been laid. The green matting that is glued on top of the concrete has been partly laid – they ran out of glue, so are due to complete the job by the end of the week. Grass seed has been offered to us from PGG Wrightson (Simon Dodds).

We will be replacing the matting for the run ups for our outdoor nets at the same time as the new cricket pitch work is carried out.

Further work will be carried out at a later date to repair the outdoor nets themselves and extend the height of the nets themselves allowing more room for spinners to practice their technique more effectively.

SEASON START DATES

We now have confirmed start dates for the season.  The season is scheduled to start in October with pre-season trainings and Colts trials being held in September.  Check our Calendar page for dates.

There will be games being played during Labour Weekend so if you are wanting to play cricket in term four and know you are going away, please give us plenty of warning so we can ensure we can still field a team.

CHS CRICKET AGM

We held an AGM for our Cricket Committee on 10th September in the school staffroom. Elected officers and committee members are:

Patron:  Phil McCreery (Principal of Cambridge High School)

TIC for Cricket:  Trevarr McCarthy

Chairperson:   Caraline Hawken

Treasurer:  Peter Durandt

Secretary:  Paula Baxter

Committee:  Martin Cakebread, Garth Thomas, Brent Hawken, Andrew Bateman, Alan van Niekerk, Murray & Kim Holt.

FUNDRAISING

We have held two successful fundraising activities recently. First off the ranks was a BBQ at Mitre 10 Mega in Cambridge. A big thanks to Stephen Deverell and staff who make this happen for a growing number of local students who are raising money for a variety of reasons. More recently we helped move books for Rotary's annual Bookarama. This proved to be a great workout for both young and old(er)! Thank you to all who gave up their time to help with fundraising. It's a necessary evil if we want to continue to keep subs down. All monies raised goes to the Cambridge High School Cricket Club, so all players benefit.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to our three coaches Colin Wood, Garth Thomas, Mark Forrest as well as Nick Bateman, a member of our 1st XI, who recently attended their Level One Coaching Course.  The experience they gained from this course will be of huge benefit to our players in the season ahead.
